Anyway, many people have asked me why the Ip is/has changed.
Answer: basically recon has become a large enough business that they have been allocated their own IP addresses instead of inheriting them from their Internet service provider like you and I all do. here is the long boring direct quote from my email from them
Hello Chase,
This notice is to inform you that Recon Gamer will be assigning new IP addresses to all customers. The IP address change is required in order for Recon Gamer to be in compliance with the central managing body of all IP address space on the internet, the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN). Due to the growing IP and technical needs of Recon Gamer, we are no longer required to be reassigned IP address space from our upstream providers. We instead are justified in receiving our own direct allocation from the central managing body of Internet Numbers, ARIN, permitting more flexibility when it comes to managing our upstream connectivity (such as peering arrangements, etc.).
In the next hour, you will receive a follow-up email containing your new game server IP address. This new game server IP address will not take effect until Friday, April 4th, 2003. Until April 4th, you will be required to simply connect to your game server using its current IP address. On or after April 4th, you will need to connect to your game server using it's *NEW* IP address.
To minimize impact on the users that currently connect to your game server, we recommend that you notify all individuals prior to April 4th of your new game server IP address. If your game server is Public class, we recommend that you publish your new game server IP address in the Message of the Day (or similar), or that you simply recommend that all users connect to your game server using the URL, which is server.kappinoffsuckaz.recongamer.com, which will automatically direct them to your new IP address on April 4th.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
***************************
Question: Why does Recon Gamer need to switch my IP address. Can we just keep the old IP?
Answer: We have obtained a direct allocation of IP addresses from ARIN, replacing the IP addresses handed down from us from our upstream provider. The guidelines set forth by ARIN, which govern what all Internet Service Providers must abide by, require us to release our current IP address space back to our upstream provider. Even in circumstances such as ours we must still release our current IP address reassignment.
Question: How will the IP address change affect my service?
Answer: Verio is our current upstream provider, and will remain our upstream provider for the foreseeable future. The IP address change that we are undertaking does not change Verio as our upstream provider. Routing will remain exactly the same for virtually everyone.
Question: When will the IP change begin, and how long will my service be down?
Answer: The process will be relatively quick and cause minimal downtime between the transition (less than one hour). In short, on April 4th, your game server will go down between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM EST, and come back online (using its new IP address) within one hour of going offline.
