Basically, of late I have been procuring a great deal of emulated software that in some cases is downloaded from private servers and ftp's. Being me, I am paranoid about the potential for viruses. I scan all incoming files methodically, however reading through an article on PC security it seems that some Trojan Horse type viruses can slip throught the net. I use Norton AV and I am 99.9% confident in it, however a shread of doubt remains.
I remember a while back having a seperate utility that scanned specifically for these virus types, does anyone know anything like it that is worth using?
Also will my firewall pick up all attempts by a Trojan or backdoor virus to connect with an outside party?

I don't have much faith in Norton AV. I use Sophos AV (http://www.sophos.com/) it has found many viruses that norton never would find. *shrug* But Sophos is a buisness AV so I donno how to really go about getting it, other than through my father's company.
As for the firewall stuff... yes and no... a Firewall router like from lynsky does not agressivly search out trogan/back door connections, but you can close open ports with it and do some other crazy stuff... Now if you run a software fire wall some will agressivly search open ports for malicious use... but I have never really delt with those from a personal use stand point... *shrug*

I was wondering if havind a hard firewall and a soft firewall working at the same time will slow down your internet connection.

well... I donno but if I had to guess I would say yes the hardware one does... as much as any router does... but the software ones are mearly looking, most of the time unless you tell them to scan and agressivly search

I'm not making this up I have never got a virus or anything. I don't even use a virus scanner. Also I download a whole ton of crap. Also if I am scared I usually trick a friend into downloading it.
