Mine. Standard black lian li PC 61. Anything else just looks cheap and flashy IMO.

I'm gonna be gettin a Lian-Li PC-75. Aluminum, has a window installed at the factory, and I'm gonna have it premodded with a 120mm blowhole and 3 extra 80s in the window. (because I don't trust myself to cut holse in a $230 case and get it right the first time.)

A full tower without a real reason is just for wank purposes.
Windows are just for wank purposes.
Lighting is just for wank purposes.
This is why I have a stock Lian Li (bought because it fulfilled my requirements and was the cheapest option).

I dont really need a bigger case. I dont need any ectra space. Plus its room enough to get some good cooling. I didnt like that neon stuff very much it reminds me to much of the early 90's. Oh scarry. As for the window, im to lazy and poor to mess up a new case by doing a shotty job at it. Im gonna do some stuff inside like stealthing the cables. should be pretty cool when im done. I twil post then.

I wouldnt mind a window. not for any reason other than, ya know, hey, its a window ... Right now i have an Antec 635SX case, its a mid tower, and looks like the cheiftecs exactly, but came with a great antec 350W PSU. I think full towers are pointless unless you have that much stuff, that many drives, which some people do. But if it can fit in a mid tower, i see no reason in an insanely big computer... hell, my next comp might be one of those shuttle mini systems, i love small computers... and all the wiring i do is for cosmetic purposes, mainly just wanted to control my ribbon cables, which i've done. Before i had ribbon cables just kinda hanging, not put out of the way, and now they are all flat against the side of the case and hidden, and i have not seen a difference in temp from "better airflow" so ive come to the conclusion that "proper airflow" is over rated and you dont need to go to extremes for airflow unless you're OCing and have high case temps... final note, i want to kill the man with the dual xeon machine, that is BEAUTIFUL...

I'm never buying anything smaller than a full tower ever again. I have very bad memories of the First Motherboard Upgrade. Trying to cram a VH-6 into that small case was hell.
Plus, one of my big priorities is room for expantion. I want another hard drive, I can put it in any case. I want another 5 hard drives, and I need the likes of a PC75. Where I go to school, they have a lot of *VERY* shitty compaqs in micro tower cases. Guess who gets to fix em all the time. I associate small cases (and obsession with quietness) with low performance and high temperature. A full tower has more space for fans, which means more airflow, which means a cooler Athlon -- we all know how hot those things get. My priorities are: Low temps, room for expantion, and l33tness. I don't care if I need a big, 60 pound machine crammed with Tornados and Delta 38s and Delta 50s to get there.
Sarig said "A full tower without a real reason is just for wank purposes". Well, that's important to me. I don't want to just have a computer, I want to have an l33t computer. Okay, so I'm insecure and materialistic. So what?

You're american! lol...
Dell and ComCRAP cases are NOT what i like. mid tower my friend, not micro or mini... And i would love to have a shuttle system apart from the comp i have now that i will constantly upgrade, which is why i'll never have one. My case has all i need, i wont have 5 HDs, only 1-2 and this case gives me room for 3. I have 3 5 1/4 drive slots, one is my Audigy drive, and another is for my cd burner that will be replaced with a CD-RW/DVD combo drive, so i still have one slot there. And the temp difference with 2 fans and 12 fans is hardly going to make a difference, unless you decide to go EXTREME OC on everything with aircooling, in which case you should be watercooling anyways. but then you have the people with control panels, and 4-5 5 1/4 devices, 6 HD raid arrays, in computer water cooling, etc etc, all that wont fit in a mid tower, it barely fits in a full size sometimes... so its all what you like, im a minimalist, i dont like to have extras that dont do much, if i can have a CD burner and DVD in one drive, then i will avoid having them seperate, things like that...
Sarig
January 24th, 2003, 03:50 PM
Yes but honestly who uses 5 hard drives. At most I can really see a purpose for four 5 1/2" drives. I'm not going to use 60Gb any time soon.
Same goes for overclocking and cooling. I'm happy with the performance of my Athlon XP 2000+, and yes it is rather hot but it works fine, I don't need anything more.
Basically I'm happy with what does the job atm.

I'm a classic Capitalist -- I'm never satisfied, and I always want more MHz, more RAM, lower temps, more HD space, etc. I know full well that I will never reach my goal of the ultimate rig, but I don't care. If I did, I'd still be on the old Pentium Classic 200. I see it like a football game. (*American* football, the real kind of football.) It's the fourth quarter, 5 minutes left on the clock, and your team is down by 20 points. You know that they're not going to win, but you keep pulling for them. Battle for the best rig. The battle is worth it in itself.

I was so happy when I felt a large brease out the case then I realise that its facing the pci's and not the agp so there is no Vid cooling. Oh well it was a fin project. Thats why I enjoy modding. Not bad. But 7 case fans is nothing. My Lian-Li PC75 has 16 fans, two 80mm front intakes (35 cfms each), four 80mm rear exhausts (also 35cfms each), three 80mm intakes in the window blowing onto the CPU, northbride, and video card. The NB and video fans are 38 cfms each, the CPU one in 84 cfms. (yes, thats 84) Add to this a 69cfm 120mm blowhole, the 30 cfm 60mm CPU fan, the ~5 cfm 40mm northbridge fan, the 24CFM 60mm video card heatsink fan, two fans in the PSU, and a 7 CFM slot cooler. I'd post a pic, but I have no digital camera.

haha look at that! we're postin at the same time. Actually my temperatures suck (for my CPU anyway) but thats most likely bcuz i dont have the TbredB core and i got a bad heatsink/CPU fan. My CPU temps are like around 50ish, 54ish © somewhere in there i believe. My case temps are like 20c lol. Yea it is loud lol and ive got some sucky 350W PSU, i dont even know what kind it is, I got it with my old case. So far it has not failed me yet, but i got money put aside incase I do need to buy another one if this one stops workin suddenly. I dont really plan on taking advantage of all the extra fans until I get new stuff where I can overclock much better and all, when you actually can use the extra cooling.

replace your case fans with vantec 80mm stealths and get a vantec aeroflow heatsink and you'll have beautiful low temps and it'll be pretty quiet... or get an SLK-900 (i think thats it) and an 80mm Vantec stealth... you dont have to have an insanely loud computer for it to be cool.
I have 3 case fans, cheap antec fans bought at best buy. Vantec aeroflow heatsink, and Antec 350w PSU with 2 fans. its fairly quiet, like a ceiling fan on med or high. My room temps are about 75F, case is about 80F, processor 115F. thats 24C room, 27C case, and 45C processor. And mt heatsink is dusty, need to blow all the dust out of my case this weekend. Last time i had temps this high and blew the dust out i dropped 3-4C.

I have just this week put a Zalman flower cooler in and a Vantec fan controller One of these (http://www.overclock.co.uk/moreinfo.php?id=1014) attached to 4 new super quiet case fans, a new Antec TrueBlue power supply with low noise technology and the sound coming out of my box has halfed even before I turn the fans down. However I found that the GF4 that I have makes far too much noise, im thinking of changing the 2 small fans on it to one big one. Good thing is that my temps havent gone up by much even when playing Splinter Cell so the less noise more heat is well worth it. I will post some pics very shortly when it doesnt look such a big mess and Ive sorted out all my cables.

$33 bucks gets you a quiet, good heatsink, the Vantec Aeronflow. And unless you are having temp problems or are OCing to the extreme, 3-4 case fan is all you need... I have 2 intake and 1 exhaust and i get only a 3-5C difference between room and case temp... you dont have to have icy cool temps unless you are OCing a lot, so sacrifice some temps for silence...

I think Ive said this before but what I use is a pyramid fan silencer (http://www.zxmods.com/cgi-bin/cp-app.cgi?usr=50X4168476&rnd=3784958&rrc=N&cip=24.118.193.160&pg=prod&ref=Pyramid+Fan+Silencer&cat=Fan+Controllers). It senses the temps and ajusts accordingly. It works great for me. When the computer starts up the fans go on full power for a check then go to their temp speed there is about a 2x difference. I would deff reccomend.

yeah my comp does the same thing it hella speeds up at the start up right before the BIOS loads up. Also i have never really heard it speed up that much lately maybe a little during when it is hot and I am playing a game. Partly due to the fact that my room is just about at 68 degrees F most of the time. Is this it: even when my computer is off there is a green diod that is always on that is placed on my mobo. Even when the computer is on it is always lit up.

Well, I did plan to overclock lol, and I still want to but my temps are border now. My video card can get hot when O/Ced so I like to keep the case very cool for that too. About that Vantec heatsink, I think I might go and get that. Its not a bad price and if what you say is true it should help my temps. And my knowledge is it comes with thermal paste or something? I'm not sure I would be able to put that on, probaly be too afraid of ruining my CPU. But if it has good instructions and you think I could do it, then I suppose i will get it. What exactly do you do to put thermal paste on? And as far as ive heard it takes a long time, why? Thx.

I use Artic Silver 3. You simply put a small amount on the CPU die (have a grain of rice sized) and spread it out to be paper thin. Its best to use a credit card or, what i use, a razor. Take your time, too little will kill the CPU and too much will cause high temps. Make it as thin as you are comfortable, some say so thin that you can read the text on the die, but im not that comfortable...
As far as the heat sink, go for it. If you want some serious OCing, get an SLK-900 heatsink and your choice of 80mm fan. I hear thats a great combo, cause you can slap any ol' 80mm fan on there, anything from a high flow 7K RPM fan to a Vantec Stealth, and its easily attached to a fanbus (rheobus, whatever)...
I say only add fans when your system starts getting hot, not just because you think you need them. :\

That is gonna be sweet Lokal guy. Are you doing just the CPU or are you doing the video and northbridge too? Im waiting for those pics.
Also jesus. My aero flow is pretty loud. Mine just has one fan connection that goes to a 3 pin on the mother board. What bout you?

Its not silent, its still a 5189RPM fan according to my motherboard monitor... But i used to have a Vantec 6027D w/ 6,250RPM fan, and the difference in noise is really noticable, as well as almost 20C lower temps... I might exaggerate on this thing a little too much, but i love it... its effective and not to loud.... if you want, slap it on a rheobus and turn it down a bit... or like i said, snag a Thermalright SLK-900 and drop any 80mm fan you want on there... expensive, but highly effective and easiest to control noise...
I wanna see those pics of you watercooled setup... hurry up! ;)

sacrifice some temps for silence...
WHAT! USE HEADPHONES IF THE NOISE BOTHERS YOU!! *bumps Tornado from 24v town to 7v* Whaddadjya say?
Personally, I associate silence with severely undercooled OEM boxes. Always with woefully inadequate HSFs sporting those abhorrent insulating blankets called thermal pads. And those machines always run at stock speeds, they'd fry if you bumped them up more than 20MHz or so. Ick! Even with my outrageous cooling system, I'm still not satisfied. I'm going to strap a modified Socket 8 heatsink to my GeForce 4. Modified with a 24CFM 60mm fan, as opposed to th 9CFM 50mm it came with. And I'm gonna be getting what, IMHO, is the mother of all Socket 462 Air Coolers: A Swiftech MCX-462+. Gonna finially put that 84 CFM Tornado to use. Although an SLK-900 with a 92mm, 119CFM Tornado would be really schweet. But it's fins are soldered on, and the 3-lug clip on a HSF that size would be hell to mount. And it's not large enough to take full advantage of a 92mm fan, much of the air goes down the sides, not through the fins. Then again, I may be insane to want 2.4 GHz so desperately out of my Athlon when most of what I play would run on a Celemine 1000.

I think the noise is kind of reasuring, because if you can plainly hear the noise your cpu fan is making, then its kind of comforting to know that you can tell when it stops (especially on an athalon, which like to combust).
Besides, its a great excuse to crank up your speakers. :D

Except for me and the other audiophiles that can still hear the fans no matter how loud you turn those speakers up.

I am one of those audiophiles, which is why i must have a quiet computer... I'm about to shell out some $$$ for the 4.1 400watt logitechs.... when i actually have $$$, which is pretty rare...

Do I look like Bill Gates to you? Plus, it's kind of hard to stuff a watercooling apparatus completely inside a case. And since I am not anything even close to an electrical engineer, I would no doubt one day turn on the CPU, and forget to turn on the water pumps. At least with über-aircooling, you know you damn well better shut that thing down ASAP if it's unusually quiet. Happened to me once. I was running a Duron and forgor to connect the 30CFM CPU fan. I though, "Hmmm.... that's quiet.... OH CRAP!", and pulled the plug. Saved my CPU.
As for speakers: I agree, crank it. Even my crappy cambridge speakers on integrated sound are more than enough for me. If I absolutely must have high-quality, no fan noise sound, I put on a pair of headphones. The big kind that make you look like an air traffic controller.

I have a set of headphones like that. Technics, they are beautiful, the damn things have bass response! They sound great full range, and are simply a great set of headphones...
Watercooling isnt that insanely expensive, and i thought the pump hooking up through a power connector from you PSU? I've never heard anyone killing a CPU with watercooling as long as you set it up correctly... :\ ::shrug::
Tan, you bastid. I want some Klipsch speakers, but im a poor bastid... logitechs fo' me, if i can scratch up the cash...

My speakers are just what came with a gateway essential back in '99.... =/
As for watercooling: There's probably waaay too much load on my +12v rail as it is. Between an overclocked Athlon and a metric assload of case fans, my noname PSU probably couldn't handle much more.
In other news, I strapped a Pentium Pro HSF to my GeForce 4. I replaced the original fan with a 24CFM 60 scavenged from a socket A cooler.

Tanaban,
If you were a real audiophile, you wouldn't stop with just regular PC speakers, at least strap a 15 inch Cerwin Vega sub on that system, and unleash the beast! :P
Of course, there's always the problem of erasing your HD with that huge magnet, so place the sub at least 2' away from your computer like me. Do you know where you can get that magnetic shielding material? Would Tweeter have it?

I'll have you know I've had my techniques home theater hooked up to my comp and surfed the net on a big screen while listening to mp3's on my 15' cerwin vega speakers.
But since i went to nights, i have to be considerate of the neighbors and have resorted to headphones

Or not... I really don't want to invest in home theater style speakers untill I see a good reciever. Then I will get that, the HD monitor, the big phat cableing, the cushhy couch, and so on and so forth. But its the fact that they are still fighting over diffent standards (5.1 6.1 8.1 & DTS/dolby). Besides in college it isnt going to be good to have that much money sitting around in dorm speakers. <_<

im not a fan of 15" subs, i like 12"... some people cant tell the difference, but 15s just sound sluggish... play fear factory or slipknot and you can tell a difference IMO. Personally, i've always been into car audio, but never into home audio since i live at home and never needed it. Right now i've spend $600 on my car stereo, 2 12" Pioneer subs powered by a 500w amp, Pioneer 50w x4 head unit, 6 1/2 compnent set up from and 6 1/2 Pioneer 3-ways in the back. I listen to music in my car more than anywhere else, at least i used to. Now that im at school and i drive my car on the weekends, im suffering from the lack of HIGH quality sound in my dorm room, from my computer. Thats why im dying to buy those Logitech 400w 4.1 z-560s... I'll wait on the full home stereo because anything i buy has to be top quality and i would want a $10,000 stereo...

I'd rather have 3 10" subs, or even 2. 10s have the most kick IMO, and they put out a bit of high end. Too bad i cant afford to put any of it into my car. Ive decided im not going to put any money into my civic. Im buying a 1989 RX-7 this summer and anything i buy for a car will go into that.

Yeah, it'll be awhile :D thats about $15k of things right there...
cars aside, before m00k starts a rampage, anyone have a clue how much a decent home stereo system would cost? just reciever and speakers and seperate amps if need be?

Amps in a "home" theater set up? umm no if the reciever is good enough you will not need a amp. Only the Subs need one and they have them built in. If you like, continue the car thread and home theater talks in a different thread cause unfortunatly this thread must DIE!
