View Full Version : Do You Have A Heatsink On Your Northbridge

If you're using a VIA board, do you have a heatsink on your northbridge. My A7V333 came with a "mini-volcano" as they call it on board. Pretty nifty if you ask me, I'm thinking of also putting one on the southbridge as well.

Wow, you must be pretty fucking bored to ask a quesion like this, Kirk.

Yah I've got a heatsink on my northbridge, but its just this orange/red thing that says 'MSI DDR'. My friend put a crystal orb on his for some reason though.

Just curious, I was looking through this local computer shop. It's really hot down here right now so the guy runs all of his "demo" machines with their side panels open, I always take a peek to see what's running. I only saw two machines with heatsinks on the northbridge.

I guess I'm bored, but seriously, does ANYONE, put one on their southbridge? I know the northbridge gets hot (hence the heatsink on newer mobos), but what about the south?

Nah i dont think ive ever heard of one on the southbridge. I guess you could put one there, but it would only be for it to look cool.

I dunno, according to the guys over at the VIA Arena, the northbridge getting too hot is responsible for 75% of all Windoze BSODs and freezes. Nobody's confirmed this though.

They're VIA chipsets.

I believe they're called different things though. Like on an Intel board, the northbridge was called Primary Bridge on my 82208A board.

My ASUS A7V333 has a square spiky one that the guys over at the [H] (http://www.hardforum.com) call a "mini-Volcano."

I've never seen a modern northbridge 'sans-hsf'. They all have at least a heatsink on it as it gets quite hot.

In Regards to SnipeBoy's question...

Northbridge: Handles the flow of data between the memory, CPU and AGP.

Southbridge: Everything else.

Hence if they're transferring data at a bus speed of 133MHz or higher (prety much all modern boards) then they're gonna need cooling in some way. The southbridge is never really cooled since it's only handling PCI speeds of 33MHz.

Answer to the thread. Of course I have a Heatsink on my northbridge, it's topped with a 40mm fan.

My motherboard came with a HSF on the northbridge (Via KT133A chipset).

Thanks i always feel a bit dumb if i ask a question like this and i see mOOk didnt manage to get in some sarcastic comment. Snipe leaves himself open for a mOOk comment anytime soon...

Heh, well according to VIA, the people without HSFs or fans on their northbridge need to cool the bastard, that's why these guys get alot of BSODs and the like.

As for the southbridge, I've seen some people put on Blue Orb coolers, all the way to a full blown Alpha. Obviously it's just for effect.

I can tell that there is no other hs or fan on the mobo, but i am wondering where it is.

I'll have to show you a pic of my latest project, the wires are alot worse. Something to show guests when they look in the window, look at my pig pen.

I got a neat gold-colored heatsink with a gigabyte logo on it. (Due to a mishap while upgrading a school comp, I may soon get an Iceberq =) Too bad it cools a KT133A chipset. But at least I took it off, got rid of the fragtape and put some AS3 on it. (Yes, AS3 on my northbridge heatsink. I must have nothing else to do, huh? Well, can't hurt...)

santos.

I, of course, have a pretty nice little heatsink/fan set-up on my KT400...
And I'd like to add, the wiring in my case would put Alienware to shame B)

yep, I think most if not all Asus A7V333's come with it, it looks really pretty too, I spent about 10 minutes looking at my new motherboard . . . :shifty:
