Just wondering what people think.

Well you do need some fans unless you want your new purty AMD box to go up in flames. But you don't need big ass Delta's in there either. I like the balance idea, but I would like it to be a little quieter when playing 5.1 Surround games.

I got a whole shit load of fans in my box... but they're all on a rheobus. My CPU is on a flower cooler. And my PSU is a completely silent Antec. So silence for me.

I've been on the "extreme cooling whatever the cost" (in sound that is) since I was helping my friend Max set up a P3 rig from spare parts. (It was an Abit VH6 with a P3/933 if anyone wants to know.) We were preparing for first boot, and I hit the button. The mobo was outside the case, in fact, the only reason Max got a case was so he didn't have to short the pins when he wanted to reboot. I looked up, and saw a humming PSU connected to the VH6, with the P3 (Which had cost me over $400 when I first got it) in it's socket, and no heatsink!!! "TURN IT OFF, TURN IT OFF!", I yelled. Right before he did, a flame erupted right between the socket and the rear I/O connectors. It lasted only a fraction of a second, but my beloved VH6, the first mobo that I had ever installed on my own, was gone forever. I have no idea if the P3 survived, I sold it off to a local computer joint "as-is" along with beat up video cards, a PSU, and a Pentium Classic 200. I later helped him assemble an AMD box, but we had no method of putting a fan on it, so we used rubber bands to cool the 750 MHz Duron, which we promptly underclocked to 500 MHz (5x100) to guard against disaster. I've demanded the best, and therefore loudest fans ever since.

Vote: Try to keep the high-pitched fans out, but it must be cool!
I dont really mind a loud computer, as long as it is not too too loud. Although I will be changing to a water cooled comp with Panaflows just to see the difference.

I need them quiet for games and stuff but you need to keep that cpu cool.

I vote strike a balance, but ive never been able to strike it myself, I have a full on rumble sitting next to me. Maybe in the new year I can sort it out.

I like a balance... ive got quite a few fans in my case... 2 in the PSU, one in the front, one in the back, one on the vid card, and one on the cpu. Until i got rid of my gf3, my crystal orb was the loudest fan in my case. I originally had a delta on my cpu cooler and decided it wasnt really necessary and replaced it with the stock AMD fan. Now my computer is fairly quiet, and it doesnt bother me anymore.
On the other hand, my friends computer sounds like a hoover vacuum! He has 2 deltas in there and a crystal orb.. plus the 2 on the psu and one in the front. I dont understand how he can play games... i went over there a while ago and i could hear his computer from downstairs and across the house.

Strike a balance.
My computer sounds like a hair dryer, i have a Vantec 6027D with an 80mm fan running at roughly 6000RPM, came with the heatsink, and runs faster than it should for some reason, but it doesnt cool for shit! i dont know why though, its supposed to be decent, Hardocp.com endorsed it and they appear trustworthy... but that was a year ago, now i've got a vantec aeroflow VA4-C7040 on order from Newegg, and it should rock... its got a fan that pushes the same CFM as mine now, but its 10 dbl. quieter :D aside from that i have a 350W antec PSU with two fans that isnt too loud, and 3 Antec 80mm case fans that im thinking about putting a rheabus on... (however you spell that, reobus ot whatever, switchs, in the front, for fans...)... the main noise i have now is my HSF, but its getting replaced, so all is good...

Do you think you are going to build a rheobus or get one that is already made? Because I can't find any that would look good on my case. I figure I just use the punch out plate and build my own. Then it will look like it is suppose to.

i will either buy that, or build my own. I like that one cause its a 3.5" instead of 5.25, which im out of. My case has 3 5.25 bays, and with CD-RW, future DVD-ROM and SB Audigy platinum, i was SOL until i found that 3.5 baybus... well, aside from building my own, but it wouldnt be as pretty :D BTW, frozencpu got a 9.29 @ resellerratings.com, #7 (newegg.com is #5), so they're a good place to buy from...

I have a atlon 1.2ghz and i would hit 127 which is my overheat alarm set to, i had a deskfan blowing on the mobo with a case side on then got an 80mm and it runs 24 hrs fine
whats the next size down from an 80mm fan and whats a good athlon heatsink/fan

Next size down is 70mm, but those are kinda scarce. Down from that is a 60mm. But if you want decent airflow from a 60, be prepared for some noise. As for a good heaksink, two letters, a number, and a non-alphanumeric charachter: SK6+.

well, im gonna try that new vantec, i'll tell you how it does. I dont see anypoint to getting anything smaller than an 80mm fan cause the noise would be insane to get a decent CFM, and without a decent CFM, whats the point? i'd suggest ghettorigging it if an 80mm is too big, the payoff will be better in terms of noise and cooling than going with a 60mm... Vantec VA4-C7040 will hopefully be my saviour, like i said, when i get it in (just shipped 2day along with my radeon 9700PRO), which should be 3-4 days, i'll install it and tell you if its worth a crap...

For the longest time I had A crystal orb, and two deltas in my case... agh you could hear it anywhere in the house. So I took my deltas out finally... and put in some lower rpm fans. A lot quieter dunno my temps though cause.. if I look then I'll probably want to put my deltas back in. I have like 4 extra fans I could mount somewhere.. even if it means drilling holes in my side panel :D . My case us old and the airflow sucks.
