View Full Version : Joystick Question

So I finally got a joystick. Took a while, but I had a friend who had one who wasn't using it, and I got it for a good price. It's a Logitech Wingman Digital 3D, with the rotating handle, extra buttons, and all that fun stuff.
So I have a few questions (the title is misleading). First, is there a different way to go about flying with a joystick compared to keyboard/mouse (what I had been using)? What I mean is are there different strategies that are easier to perform on Joystick rather than keyboard/mouse? Is there a certain way that you set up your joystick that wouldn't necessarily be defined as a standard setup that seems to work better?
Umm...I think that's it. I'll add some more if I think of any. I guess if you have any other thought that may be helpful to make a smooth transition to said joystick, that would be good to know :)
*Update: So I set up the joystick, changed a few things, and can stay in one of those vehicles for close to a minute now. Shiesh. It isn't easy switching from keyboard/mouse to a joystick that tends to want to make me turn or roll (depending on how it's set up).*

Hey there Bob,
if you'd like some suggestions, I could give you some input on this if you so desire.
I guess it'd be best if we were in TS and on a map in an empty server.
Message me somehow, on yahoo or msn,,, I'm home doing the put-off chores,,, let me know if you've got time, and I'll try to help you out here.

Alright. I'll let you know sometime that I'm on at a reasonable time.
Right now it seems that the joystick, while not being touched, has a slight tendency to turn the vehicle...it makes things confusing after a while while trying to fly.
I must run now, but I'll come back later and share some more information.

Did you calibrate your loystick in windows? If not calibrate it. My force feed back stick turns slightly to the right as the game doesnt have the force feed back init so the feed back motors dont hold stick to center.

I installed some software from Logitech designed for the joystick and calibrated it in there. The joystick reacts when I use it, and I could set some of the keys up where I was unable to before. Now, it seems that the right direction of the stick is being pressed slightly (even though it's not), causing the vehicle to turn, which doesn't help flying much.

MMM So the rotator handle is making slight contact to make it turn left. When I set my wigman force feedback up, with out rotator handle. I use forward on stick to nose down and back on stick nose up. then joystick left turn left joystick right turn right. I used 2 buttons for bank left and bank right. With the Joystick you got thats used it is just going to be one of them things, as thing are worn a bit and thats whats making the slight contact do react to you not touching the stick. You might have to calibrate it holding it in center postion. Or you may have to adjust way your holding stick to compensate for the stick.

Hmm... I could just tighten a screw and make it so it doesn't rotate...then use two more buttons to make it roll...
thanks for the idea. We'll see if that works.

I was wondering why my stick didn't shake and stuff. thx.
As for the turning.. I have the same problem but I turned down the senseitivity in the Heeelo and the airplane and its not near as bad as it was. I use the twisting feature to roll right and left.. I can fly the jets better then ever but the Heelo.. is a different story as I'm not spending a lot of time in the Heelo cause I'm working on my Knife and ordinance.

I'll do the windows calibration once I have my computer back up. As I wrote in the appropriate section on the forums, I'm changing some pieces of my system, requiring me to do some things. I should have it back up soon, which means I'll be back in BF2 soon.
