Just wondering if anyone had 'obtained' the leak? Saw an article about it and was intrigued by some of the new features it has.

Looks like the a clone of the LiteStep BarQNX theme. It also looks a bit rought. Perhaps it will make light of the Microsoft Plus bullshit that happened with the 9X series. I certainly I hope they make it free.

Errr.... are you serious? Microsoft and the word 'free' don't exist in the same sentence.
Do you think that Microsoft might one day release something that doesn't require 200mb worth of patches and service packs? I wouldn't be surprised if this was even more buggy and prone to security issues than XP...

The mOOk makes an exellent point.
The only thing you'll see free from MS is thier bug fixes...

I seriously doubt they're going to try and market something like that, unless its for say $10. It doesn't add anything but one or two frills. Something I could easily accomplish with GPL LiteStep. They'll figure it out once they see the sales versus Microsoft Plus or whatnot. But, then again these are the people who charge for XP Themes.

To me it looks just like XP, though I do I like the disk usage bars in the My Computer screen. Eventually I will buy XP :shifty: and stick with that for a while.

You guys have to remember, that is an Alpha build of Longhorn. Remember when Windows Whistler(XP) was Alpha? It looked almost exactly like Win2k. It started changing drastically in beta builds and the changes from the Betas were refined in the Release Canidate builds.
I seriously doubt that Longhorn will look anything like XP by time MS is done with the Beta testing period of it. Longhorn final won't be released for another year or 2 so MS has alot of time for change. I doubt that it will even be called Longhorn anymore once it nears pre-Release Canidate status(Longhorn is simply a testing codename like Whistler was).

Now what will Longhorn be actually, when it's finally released? Will it be a simple addon pack like the old MS Plus, a "SE" version of XP, a new OS different from Pallidium? There are just way too many soucres out there saying it's this or that.

I don't know, but I do know that it will be A) extremely overpriced and B) bloated. It'll probly need something like 512MB of RAM minimum. Anyone remember when Win3.0 fit into 640k on an 8086?
And I don't like the look of it. I still cant stand XP's default skin. When I install/reinstall XP, the very first thing I do, even before installing any drivers, is change it back so that it looks like 98SE. That fancy crap eats up RAM ya know! (heh, even when I had 896MB I was paranoid about conserving every byte.)
Hey... maybe we could gamble on how many MHz itll need! Start a HZ Casino! :P

Don't really mind the memory sucking, but the Luna theme drives me insane. It has got to be the ugliest thing I've ever laid eyes on. When I first got XP a year ago, I drooled over it for a day or two then immediately went to ThemeXP (http://www.themexp.org) to change that ugly mofo.
Now with SP1 you can't use the free TGTsoft (http://www.tgtsoft.com) uxtheme patcher :(.

Well if you look at the code it looks like Longhorn will fit right on in, but will try and block our loved custom themes.

oh gimme a break, that's exactly what people said about Win98.
"It looks the same as Win95, I'm not upgrading."
sheesh...some people want everything at once...Zomb has excellent points, XP practically just came out for goodness sakes.

Well the difference between 95 and 98 for those people was $80. If Longhorn (when it comes out) is just like the "Plus!" pack for Win98, would you pay $89.95 for it?

Man i dont know what it is but why is everybody always mad at microsoft. Is it he trendy thing to do?? Without microsoft the computer industry would not be where it is right now, maybe worse or maybe be better. But they have taken a big step forward with XP, since I installed XP about 2 months ago I have had a decrease of about 500% in BSODs and general lock ups, I can count them on 1 hand. I am by no means saying that Microsoft and Bill Gates is perfect in there business practices, but they are getting better. and with pressure from Macintosh and Linux they realize that they have to clean up there act to still compete.

Good point. I look at Microsoft as a sort of necessary evil. But I will never forgive them for unleashing Windows ME on the world. But just when they're finially getting their act together, fixing windows bugs and such, they a) introduce the vaunted Palladium and B) continue price gouging. And in terms of bugs, they still have a long way to go. I figure Microsoft owes me more than $50,000 for beta testing their products.
